Why your Google Business Profile is not showing up

By · Updated 23 September 2026

A profile that will not appear is almost always one of four things: it was never verified, it has been suspended, there are two listings competing with each other, or it is working perfectly and you are searching from the wrong place. From the outside all four look identical, and they have completely different fixes, so the first job is working out which one you have rather than changing settings at random.

The short version

  • Searching your own name while signed in proves nothing, because Google shows you your own listing either way.
  • A suspended profile vanishes from public results while still looking entirely normal inside the dashboard.
  • How far the searcher is from you is a ranking factor you cannot edit, and no amount of profile work overrides it.
  • Edits to a service area can take a couple of days to take effect, so give a change time before deciding it failed.
  • Two listings for one business compete with each other, and the fix is a merge rather than deleting one.

Check it properly before you change anything

Most of these investigations start with a false reading. You search your business name on your own phone, signed in to the account that owns the profile, standing in your own kitchen, and Google obligingly shows it to you. That tells you nothing about what a stranger sees.

Do it the other way. Sign out, or use a private window. Better still, ask somebody in the town you actually want work from to search the thing a customer would search, which is your trade and their town, not your business name.

Those are two separate questions and they get run together constantly. "My name does not bring me up" is usually verification or a suspension. "My trade and my town does not bring me up" is usually competition and distance, which is a slower and more ordinary problem.

Work down this list in order. Changing settings before you know which row you are on is how a working profile gets broken.

Is it actually verified

An unverified profile does not appear publicly, and this is the single most common answer. People complete the setup form, see the profile in their own dashboard, and reasonably assume it is live. The verification step was started and never finished, usually because a postcard did not arrive or a code expired.

The dashboard says so plainly if you look for it. If there is a prompt to verify, or a status saying pending, that is your answer and no amount of adding photographs will change it.

If a code expired, request another. If a verification was rejected, appeal rather than starting a second listing, because a fresh listing makes the situation worse and does not reset anything in your favour.

Is it suspended

A suspension is the nasty one, because the profile can look completely normal from inside. You log in, everything is there, the photographs are where you left them, and meanwhile the public listing has gone.

Look for a notice in the dashboard, and take seriously anything you changed in the days before it went. Adding a keyword to the business name, changing the address, or switching to a category that implies work you are not registered for are the usual triggers.

The fix is the reinstatement form, and the order matters: undo whatever caused it first, then appeal. Appealing while the violation is still on the profile is how an appeal gets refused. Do not create a replacement listing while you wait, however long it takes, because that makes the case harder rather than covering the gap.

Are there two of you

Google builds unverified listings from other places a business appears, so there may have been one before you created yours. The result is two listings for one business, which compete with each other, split the reviews, and mean the one a customer finds is often the one you have never logged into.

Search Maps for your business name, then for your mobile number, then for old versions of the name if you have ever changed it. The duplicate is frequently sitting on a former trading name or a previous address.

Report it as a duplicate rather than deleting either. A merge keeps the reviews attached to the surviving listing. Deleting throws them away, and reviews are the part you cannot rebuild.

Or it is working, and you are simply too far away

This is the outcome nobody wants and it is the most common of the four. The profile is verified, unsuspended, unique, filled in properly, and it still does not come up when you search your trade and a town twenty miles off. Nothing is broken.

Distance between the searcher and where the business is based is one of the things Google weighs, and it is the one input you cannot edit. Listing a town in your service area makes you eligible to appear there. It does not place you there, and it never has.

This is also why the two hours of driving limit in Google's guidelines is not the opportunity it looks like. You can list a patch that wide. You will not realistically rank across it from one base, and stuffing the area list with places you never go is a cost rather than a lever.

The honest version of this problem is that ranking for your trade and a town is competitive and slow, and it is won with reviews, activity and time rather than with a settings change. If the profile is correct and the name search works, the setup part of the job is finished.

What will not fix it

Every one of these is sold as a fix somewhere, and all of them waste a fortnight.

  • Posting to the profile every day. Posts are a communication feature, and treating them as a ranking lever is a well-worn disappointment.
  • Stuffing the description with your trade and every town nearby. It is not a ranking field, and it reads badly to the only audience it does reach.
  • Adding the other nine categories. If the primary is right, the rest are not what is holding you back.
  • Deleting and recreating the listing. This throws away the reviews and the age of the profile, and it fixes nothing that an appeal would not have fixed.
  • Buying citations or directory bundles. The listing being absent is not a link problem, and it never was.

Common questions

Why can I see my Google Business Profile but customers cannot?
Almost always because it is unverified or suspended. Google shows you your own profile while you are signed in to the account that owns it, whatever its public status, so check signed out or on somebody else's phone before assuming it is live.
How do I know if my Google Business Profile is suspended?
The dashboard carries a notice, but the profile itself can look entirely normal from inside, which is what makes this one confusing. The public listing disappearing while everything looks fine when you log in is the signature of a suspension rather than a glitch.
Why do I not show up in a town I have listed in my service area?
Listing a town makes you eligible to appear there, it does not place you there. Distance from the searcher is one of the things Google weighs and you cannot edit it, so a base twenty miles away competes badly against a business in the town regardless of how complete your profile is.
My profile disappeared after I edited it. What happened?
Changing the business name, the address or the category can send a profile back for review, and it is temporarily pulled while that happens. Wait it out rather than editing again, because a second change during a review extends the process.
There are two listings for my business. Which do I delete?
Neither. Report one as a duplicate so they are merged, which keeps the reviews attached to the surviving listing. Deleting the wrong one throws away review history that cannot be recovered or moved.
How long does it take for changes to show up?
Small edits are often quick, service area changes can take a couple of days, and anything that triggers a review takes longer. Give a change a few days before concluding it did not work, because editing again in the meantime restarts the clock.
