What a electrician's quote must include
- Your business name and contact details (and logo, if you have one)
- A quote number and the date
- The client's name and the job address
- Itemised lines: each piece of work and each material, with its price
- The total, and whether VAT (or your local sales tax) is included
- How long the price holds, where 30 days is standard
- What's excluded, stated plainly
- Deposit and payment terms, so the money conversation happens before the work
- Testing and certification priced on the quote itself, not added afterwards
Tips from the trade
- Itemise the consumer unit and accessories. Named parts justify the number when the customer compares quotes.
- State what's excluded (making good, redecoration). Plaster dust causes more disputes than electricity does.
- Say what the price assumes about the existing installation. A board with no spare ways is a different job, and a line saying so is cheaper than the conversation.
- Price testing and certification on the quote rather than adding it later. A quote that hides it looks cheaper than the one that doesn't, and you are the one who has to explain the difference.

- Separately, and on the quote rather than added afterwards. It is skilled work that is legally required, and a quote leaving it out looks cheaper than one that includes it. You are the person who then has to explain the difference, so it is easier to show it from the start.
- How do I quote rewiring an old house I have only partly seen?
- Price the circuits you have surveyed as a fixed sum and put the rest behind stated assumptions: accessible loft, liftable floorboards, no hidden junction boxes buried in plaster. Then give each assumption a rate if it turns out to be wrong. An old house always has one surprise, and the quote that named the possibility is the one that survives finding it.
- Quote or estimate: which should I send?
- A quote is a fixed price for defined work; an estimate is an informed guess that can move. Customers prefer quotes, so quote whenever the scope is knowable and keep the genuinely unknown out as a stated exclusion or provisional line.
- How long should my quote stay valid?
- Thirty days is the common default. Shorten it when material prices are moving, and say so on the quote. A validity window also gives an undecided customer a gentle reason to stop drifting.
